Remembrance Activities 2017
Last week there were many activities held to commemorate Remembrance Day 2017. On Tuesday, children from a local day care centre, Kinderhaven, came to the College to help plant a special small poppy garden. Following this they visited Gungahlin Public Library for story time and then participated in poppy craft activities with the College students currently studying child care. A wonderful community effort enjoyed by all involved.
Connect activities for College students included a video presentation made by current students featuring students, past and present, and staff. Connect classes were invited to participate in laying games as they had in the trenches during World War 1.
Wednesday saw the Domain turn from green to red with 11 800 handmade poppies planted by student volunteers, an awesome display! Thursday was the official opening of the poppy garden with those who contributed to making the poppies invited to view their handy work and enjoy afternoon tea, kindly catered for by the Gungahlin CWA. They were also treated to entertainment by Year 11 dance students and a vocal performance from Year 12 student, Kirsten Busby.
A quilted wall hanging was also unveiled for all to admire. A big thank you to the staff and students who helped out, the Gungahlin CWA, the Gungahlin Rotary Club and the Gungahlin RSL sub-branch for their generous support of the Poppy Project.
The whole school Remembrance Assembly held on Friday in Town Park concluded the week’s activities. Staff, students and special guests commemorated the week with great respect being paid to those who have fallen to enable our freedom today.
