ANNUAL CANBERRA CAREERS EXPO

Gungahlin College Careers team are organising an in-school excursion to the Careers XPO on Wednesday 2 August for all of Year 12. This Careers Xpo will provide information about career opportunities and will include over 80 local and national exhibitors, including universities, colleges and career placement organisations. It is considered to be a crucial step for students in the post college decision making process.

Students can catch a bus from the college (parking at the Xpo is limited) and will be required to complete a Medical Information and Consent form for this excursion. These notes will be made available from the Careers Office and on Schoology. They are to be completed and dropped into the box outside the Careers office labelled ‘Careers Xpo.

Following this event, students can attend Tertiary Open Days on Saturday 26 August to gain more in depth information if going to University is their interest.

DEFENCE NEWS

Currently the ADF is reviewing many of the Defence Community Organisation (DCO) programs. DCO has recently completed a review of the Partner Education and Employment Program (PEEP). This review recognised the need for greater support for the immediate employability of partners of serving members following relocations due to posting.

As of July 1 2017, a new program called Partner Employment Assistance Program (PEAP) will be available. If posted to a new location with an ADF member, a partner can apply for up to $1500 to access employment related initiatives such as professional employment services and professional re-registration expenses. Further information can be obtained on the DCO website, contacting the Defence Family Helpline (1800 624 608) or email.

CLASS CHANGES FOR SEMESTER 2

Class changes should not be necessary at this time of year unless students intend on changing package types. If students feel they need to change a class for Semester 2, they should start the process with a discussion with their Connect teacher.

STUDENT WELLBEING

If students are struggling to cope, talking to their teachers and Connect teacher is always the first option. We also have a substantial wellbeing team at the College including House Co’s, Defence Transition Mentor, Youth Support Worker and a School Psychologist. There are also services such as Headspace (1800 650 890), Lifeline (13 11 14) and Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636) that can be contacted.

CHANGE OF CONTACT DETAILS

Please remember to let the front office staff know immediately if your contact details (home address, phone number or email address) have changed, or if your family situation has changed. In the event of an emergency with your young person at the College, it is critical that our records are up to date so that we can reach you quickly. Please email gungahlincollege@ed.act.edu.au with any updated contact information.
