GUNGAHLIN COLLEGE BOARD APPOINTMENTS
Thank you to our outgoing College Board members Inge Saris (parent representative and Board Chair), Steve Lindner (parent representative), Sreenatha Anavatti (community representative), Bailey Lutton (student representative) and David Baker (staff representative) for their highly valued time on the Board. A special thank you to Inge Saris for her dedication to the role of Board Chair during her two year appointment.
Following the 2017 Board nomination and election process, we welcome Lyndal Reid (parent representative), David Vernon (parent representative), Jess Storrar (student representative) and Stephanie Williams (staff representative) to the Gungahlin College Board. Our community member is yet to be announced.
PARENT TEACHER NIGHT – 6 APRIL 2017
Parent Teacher interviews will take place at the College on Thursday 6 April from 3.30–7.30pm. Parents book interviews online via the PTO booking system using the instructions and login details sent to families in Week 9. If you did not receive your child’s progress report with your PTO details please contact the College on 61421000.
Gungahlin College teachers Luke Broadhurst, Mark Clutton, Betty Chau and Natalia Pelle will be leading a school excursion to the United States of America from 6–19 April so will not be available at Parent Teacher Night on 6 April. If you wish to meet with one of these teachers, or any other teacher who may be unavailable, please make a request for an alternative time through the PTO booking program.
YEAR 12 TERTIARY STUDENTS: AST AND TRIALS
The 2017 ACT Scaling Tests (AST) will take place on 5 and 6 September 2017 (Tuesday and Wednesday of Week 8 Semester 2). All Year 12 students who want an ATAR must be in Canberra and sit these tests at Gungahlin College. Clear your calendars! (Overseas holidays, etc are not valid reasons for a second sitting).
If Year 12 students have NOT already completed and submitted their AST Application Form, we are assuming that you no longer intend to sit the AST and do not desire a tertiary entrance rank.
Year 12 Tertiary students will be sitting a mini AST trial on Monday the 3 April (Week 10) in the gym. Students will sit the multiple choice exam in the morning and the short response exam in the afternoon with a break for lunch. They will need to arrive at the gym no later than 8.20am. They will not attend any other regular scheduled classes on that day. All Year 12 accredited students and all Year 11 T and A students will attend classes as normal.
What to bring
Water in a clear bottle without a label and student ID. Other essential and recommended equipment is outlined below:
- Pencils – bring more than one 2B
- Pencil sharpener
- Ruler (clean)
- Pens or biros
- Clean ruler
- Pencils sharpeners

The Gungahlin College P&C Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on Wednesday 15 March and the following people have been elected for Gungahlin College P&C Committee 2017:

The P&C would like to acknowledge the work of our outgoing Treasurer, Peter Murray.
Thank you to parents/carers who have paid their P&C Voluntary Contributions. These are used to fund a number of different resources throughout the College for both staff and students, which includes the water coolers, a giant Jenga set, picture frames for the art students, maths and science resources, and much more.
The second hand uniform shop is proving very successful thank you to Marina Pilicic and our committee. The second hand uniform shop will be open on our College Open Night on Thursday 18 May.

Kookaburra Kids ACT Launch
Last week I attended the ACT launch of the Kookaburra Kids program. DCO have approved a grant to this great organisation to specifically assist Defence families within the ACT. This is a program that supports children who live in a family that is affected by mental illness. Kookaburra Kids core program is open to all civilians but the organisers have addressed that many ADF children could also benefit from the program and due to the unique stresses they can encounter, this new Defence specific program has been created. The eligible age for children to attend is 8–18 (Year 3–Year 12). If you would like any information regarding this program, please do not hesitate to contact me.
I have many willing volunteers to knit and crochet the poppies for the Remembrance Poppy Garden project but do not have the budget to buy the wool required to keep them busy, many of them are elderly and cannot supply the wool themselves. If you have any red 8 ply wool at home or are willing to purchase some (one ball from Homebase costs $2.50 and makes about 15 poppies), it would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be left at the Front Office.
Thank you to Jess Smith at McGrath Real Estate Gungahlin for generously donating a weekly prize for staff which is awarded in line with our three strategic priorities – Inspiring Teaching, Successful Transitions and Vibrant Community. The prize winners for Week 8 were our wonderful team of Learning Support Assistants and Steve Collins.
