Student Principal for the Day by Grace Llanwarne
I really enjoyed being Student Principal for the Day on 3 June 2015. It was a privilege to have that opportunity to see how the college is run. I really did not have any real knowledge or expectations beforehand, and so I was very open to all that occurred on the day.
I shadowed Gai Beecher as she went about her daily activities. In the morning we visited an English class to do a lesson observation on a pre-service teacher who was teaching the class. We had morning tea with the front office administrative staff, to check how they were progressing with their duties.
We then met with the Associate Principals, Craig and John, where I enjoyed discussing issues around the school. At this meeting, I was able to talk about what I would change and what I think would work better. Gai is probably the best principal I have had, she’s great. I like how she makes the effort to get students opinions.
I then went to staff announcements during the lunch break, where staff were made aware of important events and activities coming up in the next few days.
My opinion of the role of a principal has changed. It is harder than I expected. The principal doesn’t just deal with students, but spends a lot of her time working with staff. It certainly was a great opportunity to see a different side of the school, and I would encourage other students to take up this opportunity next year.
