Alex reflects on an unforgettable experience at the UBS Finance Academy
In July, I was given the opportunity to attend a week long course at the UBS (the Union Bank of Switzerland) Finance Academy. I was among one of the 50 year 11 students selected from public schools across Australia, to attend the UBS Finance Academy; we were taken to Sydney to stay at Macquarie University for a week to learn about the world of banking and finance.
The Finance Academy provided me with an opportunity to learn about how the global financial markets work, and also to experience first-hand the day in a life operations of investment banking and finance, as well as a variety of personal development courses. During my time at the UBS Finance Academy, I was taken to see: the behind the scenes operations of the Australian branches of CNBC, went to Sydney Art Gallery to listen to the inner workings of businesses, had a tour around the UBS trading floor, had a variety of lectures on equity and investment banking and I even had the opportunity to go to a canapé function which allowed us to hear from the staff about the wide range finance related career opportunities. Although my time spent at the UBS Finance Academy wasn’t only spent at finance lectures and banking meetings, we also did a variety of personal training courses such as: team building exercises, presentation skills and even a getting to know yourself session which we spent looking at Myer’s Briggs indicator tests.
My experience at the UBS Finance Academy will be unforgettable. From my time there I have been able to really gain a deeper understanding not only into the world of finance and business, but has allowed me to develop my confidence and determination as well as my personal goals for the future. I would highly suggest anyone, who has even the slightest interest into the world of finance to try and apply for the Finance Academy in the future.
